World Autism Awareness Day: What Do I Need to Know?
This Saturday, April 2, marks the eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day. Make sure you show your support by wearing blue. Many organizations and groups including Autism Speaks and the United Nations will honor the day. Around the globe, historic airports, bridges, museums, concert halls, restaurants, hospitals and retail stores will be marked with blue lighting in an effort to help raise awareness. Unfortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 68 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with autism, as they account for 1 in 42 cases, while girls account for 1 in 189 cases. John O. Roark, 1940-2016
Sadly, on Saturday, January 23, 2016, our very own John O. Roark passed away at the age of 75. This is a tremendous loss for our firm and for the people of Central Texas. Roark was longtime supporter and leader within the Texas Horsemen’s Partnership Chairman and National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA). Additionally, he was a was a member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the American Board of Trial Advocates and a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and a municipal court judge in Nolanville. Maryland Assembly Recommends Birth Injury Fund
According to the Baltimore Sun, a Maryland task force, for the second time in two years, has recommended that the state create a birth injury fund for babies born with neurological complications. The fund would be modeled after state funds like those in Virginia and Florida—most patient advocates and injury attorneys oppose these measures. Opponents, including the Maryland Association for Justice, say the fund would be “unfair to victims who should be able to seek accountability in a public forum that holds providers responsible for care provided.” The fund would need Legislative approval during the 2016 year in order to operate.
