Child Gouged with Amniotic Hook During Birth

A family in Tennessee is reportedly furious with a local hospital, saying their child suffered gouging wounds from an amniotic hook used recklessly during birth. According to WKRN-TV, the child was born at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Her parents created a Facebook post this spring detailing the injuries that was shared thousands of times. The parents claim that a mid-wife used an amniotic hook to break the mother’s water. However, instead of breaking the sac, the hook scratched the child’s head repeatedly. The mother claims the mid-wife said, “This is a tough water bag. Oh my god, this is so tough,” according to WKRN. They claim she spent 5 to 10 minutes scratching the child with the hook before realizing she did not hit the amniotic sac. Disfigurement Lawsuit Results in $47 Million Verdict

A federal jury in Pennsylvania awarded a 5-year-old girl and her parents $47 million earlier this year for disfigurement injuries suffered during birth. According to the New York Post, the girl’s lawsuit claims she was disfigured when hospital staff members wrapped her head with ACE Bandages that were too tight following her birth. She reportedly suffered severe scalp wounds and will need reconstructive surgery during her lifetime. There are also reports indicating she will not be able to grow hair properly. The couple involved in the lawsuit is from Texas and were traveling prior to the girl’s birth, when the mother had her prematurely at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. The lawsuit claims that the child was misdiagnosed with a subgaleal hemorrhage instead of a cephalohematoma by doctors at the hospital, thus resulting in her head being improperly bandaged. Ohio Couple Awarded $11.35 Million for Child’s Brain Injury

An Ohio jury recently awarded a couple an $11.35 million verdict in an alarming birth injury lawsuit involving a boy with brain damage. According to Ohio.com, the verdict was announced in February in Summit County, in a medical malpractice case involving a local OB/GYN and hospital. The family involved in the lawsuit said the boy is expected to need specialized medical care for the rest of his life. The boy was born in 2001 and the family contented in its lawsuit that there were several signs the child may need to be delivered via C-Section. However, the doctor involved in the delivery allegedly opted to deliver the child vaginally, using a vacuum and forceps.
