Two treatments for cerebral palsy have recently been making big impacts in the news, with both claiming to significantly impact the lives of those with the disability. One study is concerned with the use of the drug Botox, which is commonly used for cosmetic purposes to diminish wrinkles. While botulinum toxin is the most deadly poison known to science, the University of Lincoln study is focusing on the potentially deadly toxin’s ability to treat a variety of neurological symptoms. The University’s findings were discussed at a lecture held on March 19. Researchers are now able to rebuild Botox in a way that eliminates its toxicity, but keeps the drug’s ability to block the signals that tell muscles to contract. This decrease of muscle spasticity could prove to be a big improvement in the quality of life for many people with cerebral palsy.
The second treatment comes from the Monash Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. Researchers are studying the effects of cells in the umbilical blood which can be harvested at birth. If a problem occurs at birth, the cord blood is used to stop swelling in the baby’s brain, therefore preventing and reversing most of the damage. The only current way of treating oxygen-deprived newborns is by using cold blankets and other compresses to cool them directly after birth. The Australian researchers have been conducting their study in sheep and lambs with great results. They are hoping to bring their work to human subjects in the near future.
