Brachial Plexus Awareness Week

October 16 – 22 was awareness week for a birth injury that most people are unaware of: brachial plexus. With Breast Cancer Awareness Month going on at the same time, brachial plexus continues to get little recognition, which is unfortunate, because it is a tragic and preventable condition. Brachial plexus injuries in infants are a result of shoulder trauma. The trauma usually occurs when the infant becomes stuck in the birth canal and is forcibly removed. The injury results in the child’s arm hanging limply at his or her side. Sometimes the condition can be helped through physical therapy or surgery, but often it results in lifelong impairment. The goal of Brachial Plexus Awareness Week is expressed in its name: awareness. Mothers-to-be need to be aware of the possibility of this birth injury, and they should discuss with their doctors what routine procedures they will use to avoid it. Procedures…

Bingo For Cerebral Palsy

Being the parent of a child with cerebral palsy can be tough, and it can sometimes be difficult to afford the things that would make their care easier. Mary Anne Richard realized this one afternoon when she watched her friend Cathy Caceres put her 6-year-old daughter in a van to take her home. Lifting the 65-pound girl from her wheelchair did not look easy, and would only get more difficult as the child grew. As Richard considered the difficulties the single mother of three must experience every day, she decided to do something about it. Richard organized a Bingo fundraiser, a night where participants can play for Pampered Chef prizes and buy raffles for gift baskets that local merchants donate to help Caceres’ daughter Maryn. Judge Beats Daughter With Cerebral Palsy

A Texas judge is fending off swarms of angry internet users over a video posted on YouTube of him beating his 16-year-old daughter, who suffers from cerebral palsy. The video, recorded seven years ago, depicts William Adams and his wife doling out punishment on their daughter Hillary. Hillary had set up the camera secretly to record the abuse she was experiencing at the hands of her father. In the video, Hillary is being reprimanded for illegally downloading video games and music on her computer. Adams demands that she bend over her bed so he can beat her with a belt. Hillary does not comply, so Adams begins hitting her repeatedly. The video goes on for a full seven minutes, with Adams cursing the girl and hitting her.
