Cerebral Palsy: Family Awarded $14.5 Million Following Botched Delivery

A Pennsylvania jury recently awarded a family $14.5 million following a botched delivery that allegedly resulted in a cerebral palsy diagnosis for a child. According to the Legal Intelligencer, a federal jury awarded a couple the damages in January. The medical malpractice lawsuit claimed that the mother of the child was admitted to Clearfield Hospital in 2012, and that doctors failed to notice that her dilation and contractions had been progressing. The lawsuit claimed that the mother was administered Pitocin to accelerate the birthing process, but was given an inappropriate dose of the medication. It claimed that after it was administered, the child’s heart rate slowed down to about 60 beats per minute. The mother was allegedly given the drug for the rest of the delivery. Doctor Accused of Drinking Prior to Botched Delivery

KTNV-TV reports that a Las Vegas doctor has been accused of drinking prior to the birth of a child who suffered severe injuries.  The news outlet reports that video shows Dr. Frank DeLee allegedly discussing leaving a bar just before delivering a baby. In the video, the doctor can be heard saying “wasn’t that many people in the bar when I left.” A nurse also reportedly asks the doctor if he wasted a drink. The doctor was speaking to the nurse while the mother of the child was in induced labor and facing a possible C-section. The incident took place at Sunrise Hospital in May 2015. The family of the expecting mother was recording the birthing process with a cell phone video when the conversation was picked up. DeLee reportedly discusses tequila with the nurse. Actor’s Son Dies Following Delayed C-Section

Tragically, according to the British media, the son of actor Jamie King, who has appeared on The Tudors, died recently from severe brain damage following his birth.  According to the Telegraph, the mother involved in the birth had her C-Section delayed for 12 hours and the actor apparently believes it lead to his son’s fatal injuries. According the news source, the boy lived just five days earlier this month following his birth. A coroner ruled that the boy was “born in poor condition and died due to a delay in his delivery,” the news outlet reported. The child was allegedly deprived of oxygen during the birthing process, leading to severe brain injuries. King is now urging couples to take notes during deliveries to avoid conflicts with healthcare providers.
