The concern among dentists had been that treating the problem could cause bacteria to get into a mother’s bloodstream, where it could reach the fetus. A new study published in the journal of Pediatrics found that women can be confident about receiving dental treatment without causing meaningful effects on their baby’s development. Dr. Bryan Michalowicz, a dentists at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in Minneapolis and his colleagues tested more than 400 two-year olds who had been born to mothers with gum disease. A late-stage study of the vaginal gel made by Columbia Laboratories Inc and Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc found hope in preventing premature birth in women with a short cervix. Treating pregnant women participants with the hormone progesterone cut their rate of premature delivery by 45 percent, the researchers said. The study published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology will be used to support the companies’ application for marketing approval of the hormone gel. The gel is known by the brand Prochieve. In the study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health and 44 medical centers around the world looked at effects of giving progesterone to women with a short cervix. This will mean that the state, not the hospital, will be responsible for footing the bills. A new fund has been created in New York’s 2011-2012 budget to pay the newborns’ bills. Supports of the fund say the change will reduce medical malpractice premiums. However, the critics say the fund will create an unnecessary layer of burden on the state and forgive hospital for avoidable medical errors. The fund plans to cover all newborns who experience a brain or spinal cord injury due to oxygen deprivation or mechanical injury during labor, delivery or resuscitation.
