According to Nursing Times, researchers have made recent claims that lowering the temperature of the brain could help victims of stroke by preventing death or disability from occurring. A group of these researchers are seeking to acquire funding for a trial in 21 countries in Europe, involving 80 hospitals. They hope to reach 1,500 patients. Lowering the temperature of the brain puts it into a state of hibernation, causing it to require less oxygen. This reduces damage and gives doctors more time to deal with damaged blood vessels. Currently, doctors use this same technique of putting the brain into hibernation for patients who have an elevated risk of brain damage, either due to cardiac health issues or due to birth defects. Dr. Malcom Macleod of the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh notes that one European dies from a stroke every 90 seconds. Approximately double that…

February 17, 2011Preterm Births May Be Caused By Placental Bacteria Colonizations
February 16, 2011According to My Health Bowl, a study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital and at Harvard Medical School have found that there is a bacteria that colonizes the placenta in the womb, causing pre-term births in pregnant women. This bacteria is also noted to potentially cause developmental problems within the affected newborn babies. According to researchers, the bacteria colonizes following the onset of a fetal injury. It contributes to pre-term labor and may cause lifelong underlying health issues for the affected child. Depending upon the type of bacteria or organisms that form the colony in the placenta, the child may suffer from an increased or decreased risk of systemic inflammatory condition. Unfortunately, researchers have found that intrauterine infections are the most common cause of pre-term childbirth or other injuries to a growing baby. The bacteria colonies were discovered via cultures that were taken from the placentas that were…

Ohio Family Fights for Daughter With Cerebral Palsy
February 15, 2011According to About Lawsuits, in December, an Ohio judge rejected a new trial request regarding a medical malpractice lawsuit involving cerebral palsy. Previously, $13.9 million dollars were awarded in the case where the doctor was found guilty of causing cerebral palsy due to issues that occurred during delivery. Cerebral palsy occurs after an injury to an infant’s brain, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the brain during or soon after birthing. This can result in developmental issues including loss of motor functions and various additional issues that occur with cerebral palsy. However, in some children, cerebral palsy may also occur for other reasons aside from medical mistakes. The child affected, now aged 10, suffers from cerebral palsy due to birth injury that occurred due to a forced vaginal birth. Haley Cobb, the little girl affected, cannot sit without help and requires constant care and attention. The child’s parents, Debra…
