A Michigan jury awarded a family more than $130 million in damages after a child suffered severe brain injuries during the months after his birth resulting in cerebral palsy. According to the Detroit Free Press, the verdict was announced last month in Oakland County. The child reportedly suffered injuries while in the care of a Royal Oak medical facility. The verdict was reached following a three week trial. It is believed to be one of the largest medical malpractice verdicts in Michigan history. The family alleged that the boy was born prematurely, having developed a urological condition prior to his birth that would need to be investigated after he was born. A family in New Mexico was awarded $73.2 million earlier this month after a doctor allegedly botched a child birth leaving a baby with permanent brain damage. The mother is diabetic and attorneys say the doctor involved in the lawsuit failed to properly examine her over the course of more than a dozen visits to a patient clinic prior to birth. The mother was allegedly at-risk for delivering a large baby because of her age, 36, and her diabetic…

USA Today had a shocking report earlier this month claiming that the United States is the most dangerous place in the developed world to give birth. According to the investigative report, more than 50,000 mothers suffer severe injuries during childbirth each year and there are about 700 deaths. The news source reported that about half of these incidents could have been prevented or reduced in severity with better healthcare. The report suggests that maternal death and injury rates from other developed nations (including Germany, Japan and France) continue to fall, while the U.S. rate continues to rise. In 2015, it was 26.4 injuries per 100,000 births, according to USA Today. State-wise, the only exception in the U.S. appears to be California, which has implemented stricter safety practices for healthcare providers. USA Today reported that many experts feel that the rate has risen because there are fewer regulations than in other…
