According to the Phoenix New Times, a woman is suing a healthcare provider saying her son was born with a skull fracture and permanent injuries due to negligence.
The news source reports that the woman and her husband have filed a lawsuit in Arizona, arguing that doctors and nurses made numerous mistakes leading up to the birth of her child that have caused him lifelong disabilities.
Her lawsuit indicates that the mother was young and petite, and was under the care of the same doctor throughout the course of her pregnancy. At 39 weeks, she claims the provider deemed her pregnancy non high-risk, although the doctor opted to induce labor.
At the time of her induction, the mother claims that a tradition scoring system was not used to determine the readiness of her cervix, and the baby’s weight and position was not verified. She claims that within a few hours the baby’s heart rate decelerated significantly, from 60 beats per minute to 20.
However, the mother claims her labor induction continued despite the fact that she was exhibiting fetal complications. After several hours, the mother delivered the child, who was born with a skull fracture and was in need of oxygen.
The child was reportedly transferred to another medical center after his birth, where he underwent treatment for brain bleeding, seizures, renal failure and liver injuries.
The lawsuit claims the medical provider failed to properly monitor the mother and child during the delivery, resulting in a prolonged process and delays to in care for the child. It also claims that nurses failed to follow instructions provided by the doctor, resulting in miscommunication that dragged out the process.
The child allegedly needs special medical treatment, including therapies for the rest of his life. For further information, you can click on the source link below.
