Delays in Genetic Testing at Hospitals Putting Babies at Risk

Last month, the Denver Post reported that hospital delays across the country are putting babies at risk for disabilities. While it may seem obvious, the Post article had some alarming statistics and examples of delays relating to birth and genetic testing that were baffling. According to the Post, nearly every baby born in the U.S. has its blood collected within a day or two following birth, to be screened for genetic and metabolic disorders. This is done so disorders can be detected quickly, averting possible death or limiting brain damage and further disabilities. However, according to the Post, many healthcare providers are having issues with the speed or processing times associated with testing. Texas Hospital Accused of Causing Cerebral Palsy

An east Texas hospital has been accused of causing a newborn to develop cerebral palsy due to errors during the birth process. The mother’s birth injury attorney has already begun a birth injury lawsuit against the allegedly negligent physician. The mother who filed the suit alleges that she arrived at the hospital with a leak of amniotic fluid, indicating that she was nearing the point of delivery. During intake procedures, hospital staff noted that her blood pressure was steadily increasing, but did not notify the doctor of this condition. It was not until the next morning that the doctor learned about her high blood pressure. The mother was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia, meaning that she was at great risk of suffering seizures during the birth process.
