Jury Awards Over $2 Million in Erb’s Palsy Lawsuit
Prenatal care issues during the delivery of a child were at the center of a recent medical malpractice lawsuit on the East Coast. The recent New York lawsuit involved a child that was not given proper care, and a certified midwife that pulled too hard on the child’s head during delivery. The child’s mother filed a medical malpractice lawsuit on behalf of her now 7-year-old daughter who suffers from Erb’s palsy. The child has limited mobility in her left arm due to permanent nerve damage to nerves in her neck. The lawsuit alleged that issues involved during the child’s prenatal care and the delivery process caused the permanent nerve damage. Researchers in Israel believe a connection between white fiber bundles in the brain and cognitive ability will help people with cerebral palsy. The researchers believe the discovery will help match patients with the right therapy. White fiber bundles are connected by white matter in the brain. The bundles transmit electrical signals that are directly linked to a person’s cognitive ability. The research shows the relationship between the density of these bundles in the brain matter and affected areas of the brain. The results helped the researchers understand that not all areas of the brain were affected by a patient’s cerebral palsy, and therefore it helped them pinpoint the areas that were most affected. New Study Shows The Effectiveness Of A Cerebral Palsy Treatment
A new publication about children who suffer from spastic cerebral palsy and undergo a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) indicates that they are likely to feel the benefits of the treatment well into adult hood. Spastic cerebral palsy is a type of cerebral palsy that increases muscle tension or tone; the increased tone and tension causes the muscles to be very stiff and move spastically. Earlier studies have shown that children with spastic cerebral palsy experience a plateau of muscle growth at a very young age making treatment later in life more difficult. The SDR treatment is a process in which doctors locate the unnecessary nerves that cause the spastic actions and cut them, leaving the ones that allow for normal motor function alone.
