Midwife’s Mistake Causes Baby’s Brain Injury, Child Dies Three Years Later
A couple’s decision to hire a midwife and have a home birth, a much cheaper alternative many women are now choosing over expensive hospital births, caused the eventual death of their son. The midwife the couple hired failed to call an ambulance when the mother began bleeding profusely, and the placenta abruption left the child with a permanent brain injury. “He was still unable to sit alone still unable to crawl, couldn’t stand couldn’t walk couldn’t speak,” the mother told Fox News. The child died from his brain injuries just days before his third birthday. The couple hopes their story will prompt the state to require more from midwifes. “I believe they should review the guidelines, the education requirements, the accountability requirements for midwifery,” the mother concluded. Israeli Researchers Uncover Brain Link to Help People With Cerebral Palsy
Researchers in Israel believe a connection between white fiber bundles in the brain and cognitive ability will help people with cerebral palsy. The researchers believe the discovery will help match patients with the right therapy. White fiber bundles are connected by white matter in the brain. The bundles transmit electrical signals that are directly linked to a person’s cognitive ability. The research shows the relationship between the density of these bundles in the brain matter and affected areas of the brain. The results helped the researchers understand that not all areas of the brain were affected by a patient’s cerebral palsy, and therefore it helped them pinpoint the areas that were most affected. The researchers said this would allow an individual to focus on the therapies that work directly with the affected areas of the brain. The study found that current brain scans can detect these areas and can be…

New Stem Cell Research Is Helping Children Who Suffer From Brain Damage
Researchers in Germany and Korea are making headway in an effort to treat children who suffer from cerebral palsy and brain damage by studying a two-and-a-half-year old boy who had to be resuscitated after he went into cardiac arrest in 2008. During the time between his heart attack and resuscitation, the boy suffered severe brain damage that left him in a vegetative state with a minimal chance of survival. Recently, the researchers administered a treatment using the boy’s umbilical cord stem cells to treat the brain damage. Two months after the treatment, the boy learned to move and speak simple sentences. The process uses blood extracted from the umbilical cord after birth. Researchers have found that the blood inside the umbilical cord contains all the normal elements of blood but is very rich in hematopoietic stem cells. These particular stem cells tend to migrate towards the brain in large numbers…
