Texas Family Plans to File Lawsuit After Forceps Allegedly Crush Daughter’s Skull
According to the New York Daily News, a five-day-old baby from Texas died after her skull and spine were allegedly cracked by forceps during her delivery. The baby, Olivia Marie, died after her doctor, George T. Backardjiev, of the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, reportedly refused to perform a cesarean section (C-section) on December 28, 2013. Olivia’s mother, Rachel Melancon, reportedly asked the doctor about performing the procedure prior to the baby’s delivery because of her small size. Fort Hood Family Sues Government Over Son’s Birth Injuries
According to the Killeen Daily Herald, the parents of a child born with severe birth injuries at a military hospital at Fort Hood have settled their lawsuit against the U.S. government for $6.5 million. The paper reported that Kassie and Higinio Rivera filed a lawsuit against Darnall Army Medical Center in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, located in Austin, following the birth of their son on September 12, 2008. The lawsuit alleged that doctors at the hospital ignored evidence that Kassie’s contractions were over stimulated due to the excessive use of “oxytocin causing severe distress in the baby and the need for immediate delivery by caesarean section.” Following his birth, Haiden was diagnosed with severe brain injuries and cerebral palsy. He had to be airlifted to a hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and remained hospitalized for about eight days. Haiden is now…

Delays in Genetic Testing at Hospitals Putting Babies at Risk
Last month, the Denver Post reported that hospital delays across the country are putting babies at risk for disabilities. While it may seem obvious, the Post article had some alarming statistics and examples of delays relating to birth and genetic testing that were baffling. According to the Post, nearly every baby born in the U.S. has its blood collected within a day or two following birth, to be screened for genetic and metabolic disorders. This is done so disorders can be detected quickly, averting possible death or limiting brain damage and further disabilities. However, according to the Post, many healthcare providers are having issues with the speed or processing times associated with testing. Using statistics provided by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Post reported that last year, of the nearly 3 million screening tests performed, an estimated 160,000 from 31 states arrived late to labs. Among the other findings in…
