What are the Risks and Concerns for Shoulder Dystocia During Birth?

Dystocia is defined as difficult or slow delivery or labor.  Pregnancy complications like dystocia can lead to serious medical complications for both mother and baby.  When the baby is being delivered and the baby’s head is delivered but its shoulders are stuck inside the mother’s body, dystocia occurs.  Health care professionals cannot prevent dystocia, but they should be prepared to take action when it occurs. Although no one anticipates infant injury during the birth process, injuries do occur, and unfortunately, they are sometimes due to medical errors on the part of health care providers.  When complications arise during delivery, medical professionals must not delay in acting to prevent injury and possible permanent damage to the baby and mother. Texas Parents Suing After Doctor’s Negligence Results in Child’s Brain Injury

According to the lawsuit, a family in Texas alleged that their child suffered brain damage due to the negligence of the obstetrician and medical staff at Bayshore Medical Center. The family stated that the obstetrician failed to report problems in the medical condition of mother and child, failed to perform an emergency C-section in a timely manner, and failed to diagnose and treat the baby’s condition that led to permanent brain injury. When the mother entered Bayshore Medical Center in Texas at full term to deliver her child, the obstetrician and other healthcare professionals did not document any problems regarding the medical condition of the mother or child. Hospital Focuses on Neurology Care for Babies at Risk of Brain Injury

Protecting the brain health of premature and dangerously ill newborns is the focus of a new effort at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. On April 23, the hospital launched the Neuro NICU, which provides specialized neurology care for babies at risk of brain injury. The Neuro NICU, which consists of six beds inside the Packard Children’s neonatal intensive care unit, is one of just a small handful of such units around the US. These units represent advances in treatments and technologies that allow physicians not only to keep babies alive, but reduce their risk of suffering neurological problems. Several conditions can leave infants susceptible to brain injury, including premature birth, early-life infections, birth defects such as congenital heart defects, and oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery. These patients have the greatest need for the Neuro NICU team’s expertise. New neurologic research has provided tools for improving vulnerable infants’ developmental outcomes and…
