Doctor With Cerebral Palsy Able to Empathize With Children Who Have Cerebral Palsy
A doctor in St. Louis is not only offering hope to her cerebral palsy patients, but empathy as well. Dr. Jan Brunstrom-Hernandez founded the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital 15 years ago, she also has cerebral palsy. Dr. Brunstrom-Hernandez says she was inspired at an early age to become a doctor because she was surrounded by them all the time as a child. However, she initially had no desire to treat people with cerebral palsy. She said her hesitation was due to the fact that she did not want to be around people that reminded her of her own condition. She was prompted to begin a clinic in 1997 after a fellow colleague, Dr. Mike Noetzel, also at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, suggested she start one. Colorado State University Students Construct Swing For Two Children With Cerebral Palsy
Thanks to the efforts of a group of Colorado State University (CSU) students, two twins diagnosed with cerebral palsy are now able to add swinging to their play time activities. The children have to use electric wheelchairs to get around, so swinging for them was never a practical option. That was until the CSU students constructed a 3,000-pound wooden platform swing. The swing looks like a wooden deck that has been cemented into the ground. There are two harnesses at the ends of the platform where the children can strap themselves in. Once they are strapped in, someone is able to push the platform like a regular swing. In addition to the swing, they also built a deck attached to the swing with ramps for the children to get up from the house. New Study Reveals Improvement In Motor Function In Children With Cerebral Palsy
A study conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has shown major improvements in motor skills among children with cerebral palsy. Chelsey Sterling, a UAB grad student, authored the study and found that the treatment shows an increase in gray matter in the brain. Gitendra Uswatte, a co-author of the study, said that the treatment showed a remarkable improvement in the motor function of the affected limbs. The study used children from ages 2 – 7, who were administered the treatment over three weeks. The treatment itself requires the restraint of the unaffected limbs in a cast like device; the children are then instructed to use the affected limbs more. Sterling adds that this study shows the brains remarkable ability to heal itself. This is great news for people who suffer from disabilities that limit their body movement.
