$21 Million Award in Cerebral Palsy Lawsuit
Jaylan Norfleet is 9 years old. His family’s lawyer says he is “cognitively and mentally” fine, but he struggles with physical tasks. He has trouble moving his legs and controlling his arms. This is because he was born with cerebral palsy, a series of conditions that can affect motor control and cognitive development, often caused by complications during childbirth. According to a Baltimore jury, the hospital is to blame for Jaylan’s disability. Jaylan’s family was recently awarded $21 million in a lawsuit accusing the hospital of negligence during childbirth. The family claims that the Harbor Hospital made an error in judgment when doctors chose to deliver Jaylan via vaginal birth instead of cesarean, resulting in a lack of oxygen. New Study IDs Premature Birth Risks
Researchers in Australia have identified several factors that may put pregnant women at risk of a premature birth. According to the study led by Gustaaf Dekker, MD, Ph.D at the University of Adelaide, women may give birth early if they: Smoke marijuana Have a history of vaginal bleeding Have mothers with a history of pre-eclampsia Have mothers with diabetes Have high blood pressure Are very thin (body mass index under 20) Have a family history of babies with low birth weights Have a short cervix “Better understanding the risk factors involved in preterm birth moves us another step forward in potentially developing a test – genetic or otherwise – that will help us to predict with greater accuracy the risk of preterm birth,” Dekker said. “Our ultimate aim is to safeguard the lives of babies and their health in the longer term.” Dekker studied 3,234 women, and nearly 5 percent…

Car Seat Accommodations for Cerebral Palsy
On Monday we wrote about the terrible tragedy in Sacramento where a truck collided with a United Cerebral Palsy bus carrying seven adults with cerebral palsy. One of them died (along with the truck driver and an assistant on the bus), and the rest required treatment for their injuries. Passengers were treated for many injuries, including head trauma, a broken lower back, a broken arm, broken extremities, abrasions and contusions. Considering that people with cerebral palsy have delicate physical conditions, the fact that most of them survived is remarkable.
