Cerebral Palsy Indicators for Children

People with cerebral palsy have difficulty controlling their movements due to cognitive development disabilities or impairments. Cerebral palsy affects each person differently: one person might have some awkward or difficult movements, while another will be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his or her life. Children start showing signs of cerebral palsy early on. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has compiled a list of indications that your child might have cerebral palsy. Epilepsy, Autism, ADD and Cerebral Palsy Often Coexist

New research from Norway finds a large overlap between children with attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD, or autism), epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Scientists in Norway studied more than 700,000 children and published the results online in Pediatrics on June 18. They found the most overlap occurring in boys age 11 and younger. Specifically, the researchers found that: 17 percent of autistic children had ADD/ADHD 11 percent of autistic children had epilepsy 6 percent of children with ADD/ADHD were autistic 5 percent of children with ADD/ADHD were epileptic 13 percent of epileptic children had cerebral palsy 8 percent of epileptic children had ADD/ADHD 6 percent of epileptic children were autistic “The findings demonstrate the significant burden of disease associated with neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, and that this burden is disproportionately skewed towards boys,” wrote lead researcher Pål Surén and colleagues in the report….

UK Man With Cerebral Palsy Finishes Half Marathon

Some inspiring news from across the pond: a man with a severe form of cerebral palsy completed a five-day half marathon. Adam King, a 37-year-old Littleport man who cannot talk or walk, rode his electric wheelchair throughout his village and ended his half marathon at the Littleport Sports Centre. He participated in the marathon as a fundraising effort: he is saving to buy a computer that will use his eye movements to communicate. Coordinator Claire Pendle said she admires King’s tenacity. “He needs a computer and he’s doing as much as he can to raise money for it on his own,” Pendle said. “He’s not expecting to just be handed a computer or get it through any handouts.” So far, King’s efforts have brought in more than £1,600. “The support from the people of Littleport just have been fantastic…especially Littleport Sports Centre,” King said.
