Waco Facility to Offer Services to Kids with Developmental Disabilities
According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, Baylor University and McLane Children’s Scott & White are collaborating on a new facility that will attempt to mix diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical services for kids with developmental disabilities. The paper reported that the facility, the Baylor University Center for Developmental Disabilities, would offer services to children with autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome, as well as other intellectual disabilities. The facility will be located at the Hillcrest MacArthur Clinic, located at 2201 MacArthur Drive in Waco. The unveiling of the facility was made as Autism Awareness Month kicked off earlier this month. The center will offer individual therapy rooms, a playroom area, small rooms for social skills work groups and a group therapy room. “[The facility] will include the Baylor Autism Resource Clinic, which provides assessments, consultations, social skills-building exercises and other support services for children with autism spectrum disorders,” the Tribune-Herald reported. “It…

Disney Accused of Not Making Parks Assessable to Children with Disabilities
According to DisabilityScoop.com, Disney is facing allegations of discrimination in a lawsuit that says that the company does not accommodate people with disabilities at its theme parks and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit was filed earlier this month by the mothers of 16 children and young adults with disabilities, and accuses Disney of dissuading the presence of disabled youths at theme parks. According to the lawsuit, Disney had made changes to its accommodation policies last fall, allowing individuals with disabilities and their guests to skip to the front of lines for attractions. However, now, visitors to Walt Disney World and Disneyland can obtain a Disability Access Service Card, which allows them to schedule a return time to wait in line for a ride. Does Your Child Have An Intellectual Disability? Survey Finds That Just One in Three Disabled Adults Are Employed
According to DisabilityScoop.com, adults with intellectual disabilities are finding trouble entering the workforce, with about 66 percent being unemployed. The website reported that a Gallup survey indicated that of those workers who are intellectually disabled, “slightly more than half are employed in competitive environments alongside those without disabilities, while 38 percent work in sheltered workshops and 9 percent are self-employed.” The findings came from a national poll of more than 1,000 parents or guardians of adults with intellectual disabilities conducted by Gallup and the Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston. “A meaningful job is important to most of us, and people with intellectual disabilities are no different,” Gary Siperstein, director of the Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the lead researcher of the study told DisabilityScoop.com. “Government has invested millions of dollars in better outcomes for adults…
