Michigan Parents Warned of Co-Sleeping Dangers
According to ABC News, in Saginaw County, Michigan, health officials are trying to warn parents about the potential hazards of ‘co-sleeping,’ or sleeping together with small children. This warning comes following the death of yet another local child. A 13-month-old girl died with sleeping together with her father. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for parents to sleep together with young children. Health officials have always urged against it due to the potential hazards, including injury and unintentional death. Local medical examiner Kanu Virani noted that the girl had passed away on January 18th, 2011 due to compression asphyxia. The girl’s death certificate states that she died while co-sleeping with her father on a sofa. Research Shows 400,000 Depressed Mothers Giving Birth
When you look at the shiny pregnancy magazines, and hear that pregnant women have a glow it can make it seem that pregnancy is nothing but a joy. This is certainly true in an ideal situation, but with so much financial upheaval, broken relationships and even just plain bad timing or health concerns there are many pregnancies that are not joyous. The anxiety and pressure can cause an expectant mother to become a victim of depression. Researchers have found that each year more than 400,000 babies are born to mothers who are depressed. With this many babies being born to mothers who are depressed what are the chances that these mothers not only have the well known “baby blues” or post partum depression after birth but also that they are not experiencing the best level of bonding for their children. Disrupted Early Childhood Could Lead to Younger Pregnancies
A study of nearly 4,500 women from all different backgrounds in the UK has shown that several early life factors have an impact on the age at which most girls experience their first pregnancy. It seems that girls who are separate from their mothers for a period of time in the first 5 years of their life are more likely to get pregnant at younger ages. If the separation from the mother is longer than 2 years that effect changes, and has been found to prolong sexual inactivity by a few years. The women whose mothers had been separated from them permanently at an early age, such as those whose mother’s died had often been part of a stable family afterwards and were less likely to have teenage pregnancies.
