The Medical Center of Arlington has chosen to implement risk prevention tools, mainly the CALM Shoulder Screen(TM) application for use with obstetrical patients whose babies are at risk for injury from shoulder dystocia. The Medical Center of Arlington delivers over 3,700 babies annually and will be the first in Texas to implement this unique risk reduction program. Midwife’s Mistake Causes Baby’s Brain Injury, Child Dies Three Years Later

A couple’s decision to hire a midwife and have a home birth, a much cheaper alternative many women are now choosing over expensive hospital births, caused the eventual death of their son. The midwife the couple hired failed to call an ambulance when the mother began bleeding profusely, and the placenta abruption left the child with a permanent brain injury. “He was still unable to sit alone still unable to crawl, couldn’t stand couldn’t walk couldn’t speak,” the mother told Fox News. The child died from his brain injuries just days before his third birthday. The couple hopes their story will prompt the state to require more from midwifes. “I believe they should review the guidelines, the education requirements, the accountability requirements for midwifery,” the mother concluded. New Technique Could Reduce Birth Defects For In Vitro Fertilization Recipients

British researchers are studying a new technique for in vitro fertilization (IVF) that may increase the chances of a successful birth. The current average of a successful birth from IVF is 25 percent, but the new treatment is supposed to increase the chances to 75 percent. The new technique uses time lapse imaging to closely check the embryos and distinguish between those with chromosomal abnormalities and those without them. The current procedure for IVF is to check the developing embryo up to six times over five days. The new technique takes 5,000 snapshots over the same amount of time. Researchers say the new technique will increase the chance of a successful birth, consequently lowering the chances of experiencing a traumatic birth event like a miscarriage.
