Man With Cerebral Palsy Conducts Yoga Classes

Ryan McGraw, 30, is keeping active and not being held back by cerebral palsy. McGraw conducts yoga classes for people who are diagnosed with disabilities. The Chicago native said his mother was the one who turned him onto the practice. Through the years, he has adapted some of the movements to fit his abilities. People with cerebral palsy need to keep active and keep their muscles healthy. McGraw says his form of yoga helps him build flexibility, balance and coordination. He says the most important aspect to yoga that he learned at an early age was to adapt the poses and make them conform to his body, instead of trying to contort his body to the poses. McGraw believes that yoga has helped him become more comfortable with his body and his disability. Women Opting For A Natural Birth To Avoid Birth Trauma From Hospitals

The University of Sydney has released a study that shows more mothers are opting for a home birth than dealing with the possible birth trauma they may experience in hospitals. The study, published in the Journal of Medical Ethics stated that women are concerned about miscommunication their doctors. The mothers believe a woman’s capacity to make informed decisions should not be overruled by the doctors belief they are unable to while giving birth. Noted in the paper is how more emphasis placed on modern birthing practices may actually be more harmful than good. The study indicates that more women are coming out of the hospital with post-traumatic stress disorder because they have been forcibly held down while being examined during births or given a caesarian procedure against their wishes. New Botox treatment helps boy with cerebral palsy walk for the first time

In an earlier post, we discussed a new treatment using Botox to help people with cerebral palsy. In an inspirational update on that treatment, 3-year-old Aiden Farrell took his first steps recently due to receiving Botox injections into the affected areas of his body. Botox uses tiny amounts of a toxin that attacks the nervous system, but in very small doses it relaxes the contraction of muscles in some people with cerebral palsy by blocking nerve impulses. Aiden has had health problems all his life after a traumatic birth in which he was born 29 weeks premature and had to be kept alive on a ventilator. When Aiden’s mother read about the treatment online, she placed Aiden on an 18-month waiting list and he was given 12 injections last December.
