Hospital Focuses on Neurology Care for Babies at Risk of Brain Injury
Protecting the brain health of premature and dangerously ill newborns is the focus of a new effort at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. On April 23, the hospital launched the Neuro NICU, which provides specialized neurology care for babies at risk of brain injury. The Neuro NICU, which consists of six beds inside the Packard Children’s neonatal intensive care unit, is one of just a small handful of such units around the US. These units represent advances in treatments and technologies that allow physicians not only to keep babies alive, but reduce their risk of suffering neurological problems. Several conditions can leave infants susceptible to brain injury, including premature birth, early-life infections, birth defects such as congenital heart defects, and oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery. 8-Month-Old with Erb’s Palsy Denied Desperately Needed Treatment Because Of Parent’s Immigration Status
This BBC News video discusses the story of Sanika Ahmed, who was born in Portsmouth, England, and recently made international news after the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) denied the 8-month-old and her family a life-changing medical treatment. Ahmed has Erb’s palsy, which is slowly paralyzing her arm. Erb’s palsy is a disability caused by a birth injury to the brachial plexus, an important network of nerves that controls the functions of the hand, shoulder and arm. Early treatment of Erb’s palsy is crucial to halt progression of the condition and help individuals potentially regain lost movement. While her father held a legal permit to work from the summer of 2008 to the fall of 2009, the family stayed illegally in…
