Operating Room Fire Burns Woman’s Face
What was supposed to be a routine outpatient surgery for a Florida woman became a nightmare when a flash fire burned her face and neck. 29-year-old Kim Grice was going through surgery to remove some growths from her head, surgery that should have been routine and uneventful. Grice’s mother, Ann, was waiting in the hospital lobby for her daughter to when emergency crews and the fire department showed up. The explanation by hospital staff that her daughter’s face had caught fire was not comforting to Ann. “I am in shock,” Ann said. “This is not what happens with routine outpatient surgery.” Operating room fires are not as rare as one would think. Study Examines Effects of Epilepsy Medications on Pregnant Women
According to MSNBC, women with epilepsy face a difficult decision when they decide to have children, as they either must their medicine to prevent a seizure or they risk hurting the fetus. A new study from researches at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that children of mothers receiving polytherapy – a combination of epilepsy drugs – had 3 times greater odds of not finishing school. The study examined 1,235 children born to mothers with epilepsy between 1973 and 1986. Children of mothers who were only taking a single medication did not seem to be as effected and were able to complete school just like their peers, although they were less likely to pass classes with excellence. Deaths of babies in shared beds are a persistent problem rooted in cultural beliefs about the bonding and health benefits of such an arrangement, pediatricians and law enforcement personnel say.
