Church of England sedative use caused birth defects

The BBC has found that hundreds of girls who were heavily sedated in UK care homes during the 1970s and 80s may be at risk of having babies with birth defects.

These girls were given exceedingly large doses of tranquilizers and other drugs while being restrained as teenagers. Files show that one former resident was given medication at least 1,248 times over a 32-month period.

She has three children, and all of them have birth defects: her first son has respiratory problems, her second was born blind with learning difficulties, and her daughter with a cleft palate and a short lower jaw.

Nine other former residents of the Church of England run Kendall House home in Gravesend have also had children with a range of birth defects, including brain tumors, learning difficulties, and cleft palate.
