Have your fraternal twins been diagnosed with autism? Are healthcare providers failing to give you insight as to why your children received this diagnosis? We need your help.
We believe that there may be a link between terbutaline, also known as Brethine®, Bricanyl®, and Brethaire®, and autism. If you are the parents of fraternal twins with autism, you could help shed a spotlight on a link between this drug and the disorder.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has only approved terbutaline for use in asthma treatment, but it is commonly used to stop preterm labor in expecting mothers. We have strong reasons to believe that terbutaline may negatively affect an unborn baby’s brain development.
Are There Legal Options If My Twins Were Diagnosed With Autism?
Now, more than ever, research needs to be done on factors that may influence autism. Diagnoses are increasing dramatically—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that one in 68 children now has autism—a 30 percent increase over the previous two years.
There are reasons why we are specifically looking for the parents of fraternal twins, who grow from two separate fertilized eggs. Unlike identical twins, fraternal twins only share 50 percent DNA with their siblings, but face the same exposures during gestation. That means fraternal twins share exposure to all substances with their mother, including potentially harmful drugs like terbutaline.
If autism were a solely genetic disorder, prevalence rates for fraternal twins would occur at about the same rate as their siblings diagnosed with the disorder. However, the rate of autism affecting both fraternal twins occurs at a rate more than double that of autism among siblings. This suggests non-genetic causes in some cases.
Research has yet to identify a single cause for autism. Our firm is dedicated to investigating possible triggers in an effort to see autism rates decline.
