New Botox treatment helps boy with cerebral palsy walk for the first time

In an earlier post, we discussed a new treatment using Botox to help people with cerebral palsy. In an inspirational update on that treatment, 3-year-old Aiden Farrell took his first steps recently due to receiving Botox injections into the affected areas of his body. Botox uses tiny amounts of a toxin that attacks the nervous system, but in very small doses it relaxes the contraction of muscles in some people with cerebral palsy by blocking nerve impulses.

Aiden has had health problems all his life after a traumatic birth in which he was born 29 weeks premature and had to be kept alive on a ventilator. When Aiden’s mother read about the treatment online, she placed Aiden on an 18-month waiting list and he was given 12 injections last December. Aiden was able to stand and walk for the first time with his legs straighter and even with his legs apart, although he still needed his walking frame because he was using muscles for the first time he had never used before. The effects of the treatment usually last for about five to six months.

Unconventional treatments could provide a lot of hope for people with cerebral palsy, but there still remains too many children who are diagnosed with cerebral palsy due to a birth injuryor the negligence of a hospital and its staff. If your child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, it could have been the result of the hospital’s carelessness. However, you could be entitled to compensation for long-term medical costs, and you can learn about your legal rights by contacting our firm at (888) 637-6347 today to speak with our cerebral palsy lawyer.

[Did You Know: Children born before the 32nd week of pregnancy and even before the 37th week will have a greater chance of having Cerebral Palsy.]
