No Single Link to Autism, Says New Study

According to the Disability Scoop, a new study has found that no single factor can be attributed to an autism diagnosis. Researchers examined 40 previous studies and aspects of a child’s birth and neonatal condition, and how those factors may contributed to receiving an autism diagnosis later in life. The researchers did find that some issues, such as brain injury, feeding difficulties and low birth weight did increase the risk of autism, but that it is not likely that a single factor can be attributed to an onset of the developmental disorder. The study published in the journal of Pediatrics found that exposure to a number of risk factors increases the chances of autism. Broad class of conditions reflecting general compromises to perinatal and neonatal health may increase the risk, but no single factor can be implicated, said Hannah Gardener of the University of Miami. The research did find that…

Withdrawal of Treatment Top Cause of Death in NICU

According to UPI, the primary cause of infant death in a neonatal intensive care unit is withdrawing support and withholding lifesaving measures, say U.S. researchers. Dr. Julie Weiner of Children’s Mercy Hospital and colleagues examined medical records of 414 infants who died from January 1999 to December 2008 at a regional neonatal intensive care unit. The study found that most U.S. childhood deaths occur during the neonatal period and most neonatal deaths are caused by a decision to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining measures. Of the 414 infant deaths studied, 45 percent were due to major birth defects. Seventeen percent of these infants were very preterm and 35 percent of deaths were of very preterm births without congenital birth defects or brain injury, said the study. The study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that during the 10-year period, 61.6 percent of infant deaths followed withdrawal of…

Burning Coal Indoors May Lead to Birth Defects

According to Fox News, burning coal indoors may lead to birth defects. Chinese researchers Zhiwen Li and colleagues at the Peking University Health Science Center found that the odds of having birth defects such as neural tube defects are 60 percent higher for children whose mothers inhaled coal smoke than for the children of unexposed mothers. A World Health Organization report estimated that 90 percent of rural homes use coal for cooking and heating. While coal is inexpensive compared to other energy sources, it has been linked to various illnesses including lung cancer and respiratory diseases. The researchers said that indoor air pollution caused by coal burning at home is a major public health concern. Coal smoke contains chemicals known to cause health problems, including arsenic, carbon monoxide and lead. The Chinese researchers focused on rural counties that rely on use of coal for cooking and heating and where the…
