Study Finds Some Antibiotics Not Linked to Birth Defects
According to Health24, certain antibiotics during pregnancy may be safe to mother and fetus, and may not be linked to birth defects as previously believed. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has reviewed existing research and determined that antibiotics, nitro furans and sulfonamides, are appropriate when there is no suitable alternative. According to Seedol, a Pennsylvania jury has found the Hamot Medical Center’s doctors and staff responsible for birth injuries sustained during the delivery process of Tina Graham’s son. Ja’Kareon Graham and his family were awarded $21,573,993 for a cerebral palsy birth injury sustained in November 2006. Tina Graham testified that she went to the hospital believing it would be the happiest day of her life, as she excitedly awaited the birth of her son. Graham recalled that when she first arrived to the medical center, what should have been routine procedures were not handled properly as she was being prepped for child birth. The plaintiff alleged that the nursing staff failed to properly monitor Ja’Kareon’s heart rate and vital signs, as they did not detect that the baby was not receiving enough oxygen which caused him to reposition himself into a breach position. Ja’Kareon’s forced repositioning required an emergency cesarean…
