FDA Revises Diflucan Warning Label, Drug Linked to Birth Defects

According to About Lawsuits, the US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about birth defect risks associated with Diflucan, an antifungal drug used for treatment of yeast infections and meningitis. The drug safety communication issued by the FDA says that high doses of Diflucan has been associated with a number of rare and distinct birth defects and congenital anomalies. The FDA had changed high-dose Diflucan treatments, 400-800 milligrams daily, from a Category C to Category D pregnancy drug label, meaning the drug has been shown to have positive human evidence of a risk of birth defects. The low dose Diflucan has not changed and remains Category C. Diflucan is a prescription drug introduced by Pfizer used to treat yeast infections of the vagina, mouth, esophagus and other organs. Infant Suffers Permanent Brain Injuries, Parents Win Right to Sue for Negligence

According to AMA ASSN, the parents of a brain-damaged girl have won the right to sue the hospital and doctor who treated her instead of pursuing a financial remedy through a state fund for birth-related injuries. The Supreme Court of Florida ruled that the parents of Tristan Bennett can avoid the state fund, which could have significant liability consequences for other physicians involved in similar brain injury claims. Tristan was delivered by cesarean section at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, after her mother was involved in an automobile accident. The infant required resuscitation after birth but responded to oxygen efforts. Tristan was later sent to the special care nursery because of moderate respiratory distress, but continued to experience several health ailments the following week, including kidney and liver problems. Erb’s Palsy Leads to Girl’s Permanent Injuries, Jury Awards Family $1.3 Million

According to About Lawsuits, an jury has awarded Alan and Larysa Asher $1.3 million after the couple filed a birth injury lawsuit against the doctor who delivered their daughter. The couple claimed the doctor failed to diagnose that her shoulders were stuck during delivery, resulting in a brachial plexus injury. Alan and Larysa Asher filed a complaint against Dr. Anthony Onuigbo, alleging that negligence after the doctor failed to recognize that their daughter’s shoulder was lodge in place during delivery, resulting in permanent injuries when he used excessive traction to deliver her. Brachial plexus injury, also known as shoulder dystocia or Erb’s palsy, can occur when an infant becomes stuck in the birth canals and the nerves in the infant’s shoulder become damaged.
