Birth Injury Lawyers Examine Autism Studies

Two recent studies examined how factors in labor and pregnancy can cause or reduce the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Autism and Folic Acid One study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that pregnant women who take folic acid during pregnancy reduce the chances of their children developing autism by up to 40 percent. Most of us ingest a form of folic acid quite frequently; in the U.S., many grain and cereal products contain folic acid supplements. Folic acid is a B vitamin that encourages healthy cell growth. The study examined births in Norway, where the consumption of folic acid is not as widespread as it is here, and found that children whose mothers who did not take the B vitamin supplements had increased rates of ASD, Aspergers and other developmental disabilities. Autism and Premature Birth While folic acid may decrease the risk of…

Doctor’s Excessive Force Leads to Newborn’s Erb’s Palsy

One mistake during childbirth can cause permanent complications. According to a recent lawsuit, an Illinois doctor used too much force during delivery, resulting in the newborn’s Erb’s palsy. A woman went to Mt. Sinai Hospital on July 3, 2010 to give birth to her daughter. During delivery, her daughter’s shoulder became stuck behind her mother’s pelvic bone. This situation is known as shoulder dystocia, and it creates a dangerous challenge for everyone involved. Since the baby is so fragile at this stage, any undue stress can cause serious injuries. The mother sued the doctor for ignoring the…

Premature Birth Linked with Autism in New Study

In the April edition of Pediatrics, an international pediatric medical journal, a new study shows that there is a link between premature birth and autism. The study shows that the risk of autism stems from low birth rate related to premature birth. The new study is the first one to link low birth weight with an increased risk for autism. It defines very low birth weight as 3 pounds, 4 ounces or less. The study was conducted by Dr. Catherine Limperopoulos and a group of her colleagues, at the McGill University in Canada. Limperopoulos focused on 91 toddlers. All were born prematurely at a birth weight between 1 and 3.28 pounds. All births were extremely high-risk premature births and ranged from 23 to 30 week gestational periods. About 25% of the 91 toddles had positive screenings for autism. The study demonstrates that infants born at least 10 weeks early need…
