Texan Twins with Cerebral Palsy See Staying Active as Key in Overcoming Their Disability
Josh and his twin sister Jade are freshmen at Hudson High School, and like many other teenagers their age they are involved in numerous extra-curricular activities. Recently, Jade has been spending most of her time after school practicing for upcoming cheerleading tryouts, and Josh helps manage the high school’s basketball team. In their free time, Jade likes to go horseback riding and Josh has started experimenting with music production. The Alexander twins have come a long way after being born 12 weeks prematurely, KTRE-TV reported. With Josh weighing only two pounds and seven ounces and his sister weighing in at a little over one pound at birth, doctors did not expect either of them to live past 16 weeks. Cerebral Palsy Lawyers Applaud Family of Boy with Cerebral Palsy Who Raised $40,000 for Disability Research
Finn Kelly was born 11 weeks early. His premature birth caused him to suffer from a baby brain injury, which later caused his diagnosis of cerebral palsy that left him unable to walk or talk. Now 8 years old, Kelly just finished the Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon on March 23 thanks to the support of his family and friends who literally pushed him to the finish line during the last mile of the race. His team, “Friends of Finn,” ran the half marathon and to date raised more than $40,000 for the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation (CPIRF), an organization committed to researching and finding a cure for cerebral palsy. According to the Rye Daily Voice, Kelly’s family created a fundraising website for the race in addition to donations given by their friends, family and church members to help raise research money. UK Child with Erb’s Palsy Receives Six Figure Settlement From Negligent Hospital
A High Court judge in London approved an undisclosed, six figure payout to 9-year-old Demi Newell from the UK’s National Health System. Nuneaton News reported that the girl’s family accused George Eliot Hospital of negligent care during her birth, which subsequently caused her diagnosis of Erb’s palsy. During Demi’s delivery in 2003, she was so large that her shoulders became stuck—a condition known as shoulder dystocia. Because she was stuck, the medical professionals at Eliot negligently pulled her by her head in their attempts to deliver her. The malpractice resulted in a serious injury to Demi’s brachial plexus, an important network of nerves near the neck that signals the shoulders, arms and hands to move. This type of injury often leads to later diagnoses of Erb’s palsy. The injury Demi sustained to her brachial plexus caused her to have restricted use of one of her arms, making everyday activities more…
