Birth Trauma Attorneys Can Help Victims of Vacuum Extraction Injuries

Using a vacuum tool during delivery is a very risky decision for doctors to make. Two Pennsylvania parents say that doctors made a series of mistakes – including using a vacuum – during their child’s birth that led to his death. Mark and Cheryl Baiocchi filed a wrongful death lawsuit against St. Mary Medical Center, Dr. Traci Cook, the Women’s Specialists of Bucks County and Catholic Health East for medical negligence. Approximately 12 hours after arriving at the hospital, Dr. Cook used a Kiwi vacuum extraction device to remove the child during labor. The doctor used the device multiple times even though it was not necessary, according to the lawsuit. The vacuum raised the child’s heart rate, causing heart tone tachychardia. The child’s shoulder became stuck, causing shoulder dystocia. When he was born, he was “cyanotic, pulseless, apneic and floppy.” Doctors transferred him to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. New Study IDs Premature Birth Risks

Researchers in Australia have identified several factors that may put pregnant women at risk of a premature birth. According to the study led by Gustaaf Dekker, MD, Ph.D at the University of Adelaide, women may give birth early if they: Smoke marijuana Have a history of vaginal bleeding Have mothers with a history of pre-eclampsia Have mothers with diabetes Have high blood pressure Are very thin (body mass index under 20) Have a family history of babies with low birth weights Have a short cervix “Better understanding the risk factors involved in preterm birth moves us another step forward in potentially developing a test – genetic or otherwise – that will help us to predict with greater accuracy the risk of preterm birth,” Dekker said. “Our ultimate aim is to safeguard the lives of babies and their health in the longer term.” Dekker studied 3,234 women, and nearly 5 percent…

Iowa Family Sues For Botched C-Section and Birth Injury

A husband and wife in Iowa are accusing the staff at the University of Iowa Hospital of medical negligence and suing the organization in an attempt to gain restitution for the injury of their newborn son. Jody and Steve Schmitz allege that doctors cut the dome of Jody’s bladder during a C-section, and injured the skull of their child, Aiden, during the delivery. Aiden suffered a skull deformity, a partial skull fracture and several areas of subdural hemorrhage during the “traumatic birth,” according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit also claims that, because of her bladder injury, Jody suffered infection, bowel obstruction, pelvic abscess and wound separation, and doctors had to place her on a feeding tube. The couple originally filed their complaints with the State Appeal Board, but the board denied them. The Schmitz’s hope to obtain damages for all that their son has experienced and will experience in relation…
