When the parents of Slater Jett Meyers lost their son at 8 months due to brain injury, they made a powerful gesture in his honor. Ilana and Glenn Meyers created the Slater Jett Meyers Foundation, which has provided more than $500,000 since 2002 to serve children who have suffered birth injuries. The Meyers say that when they consider where to spend the money they raise through their foundation, they think of what their son would need had he survived. C-section Results in Fatal Birth Injury

Doctors all over the world regularly perform cesarean sections every day, usually without any problems due to advances in modern medicine. However, an infant born at Shaktinagar District Hospital in India died last month due to a slip of the doctor’s surgical knife during a C-section. The surgeon cut a one-inch deep gash on the newborn’s head. According to The Times of India, the mother’s family filed a complaint with police, but the doctor states that the electricity went off in the operating room at the time that he made his surgical mistake. The surgeon admits that he did wound the baby with his surgical knife, and he reported following protocol by stitching the wound, administering saline and giving the newborn oxygen. Jail Neglects Woman Giving Birth

Most women who file for medical negligence due to a birth injury or other birthing problem bring their suit against a hospital or other medical professional. Imka Pope, however, brings her medical negligence suit against the King County Jail, which allowed Pope to give birth alone, on the jail floor, 14 years ago. According to SeattlePi.com, Pope suffers from schizoaffective disorder. During a psychotic episode when she was off her medication, Pope fell asleep on a Metro bus bench. Police arrested the nine-months-pregnant Pope for trespassing, and six days later, she gave birth. Documents show that only one person on staff in the jail noted that Pope appeared pregnant, and her lawyers state that officers and nurses made little effort to treat her schizoaffective disorder.
