Boy with Birth Injury Receives Millions in Compensation
As a result of his delivery at London’s St. George’s Hospital in 2004, Leo Whiten suffered severe brain damage that requires others to take care of him. The boy is now seven years old, and he and his family claimed damages against the hospital for personal injury and financial losses because of the negligence shown to Leo’s mother and the birthing process. According to the UK’s The Independent, Judges in the case determined that Leo will never be able to live independently, will not be capable of employment and will not have the mental capacity to handle his own affairs. In fact, Leo has limited mobility, cannot walk or stand unaided and has no functional speech due to the birth injury. Australian Woman Sues Obstetrician over Her Own Birth Injury
Halina Jane Gillett, an Australian women who will be celebrating her 26th birthday this coming October, is suing Dr. Jeffrey Robinson for her current affliction of Erb’s palsy. Dr. Robinson was the obstetrician who delivered Halina over 25 years ago. Halina’s mother, Marilyn Benson-Inglis, states that she asked Dr. Robinson about a caesarean delivery because she was concerned that her child might be too large to deliver naturally. When Halina’s mother went into labor, the two choices available to deliver the child were a caesarean or use of forceps; Dr. Robinson chose to pull the baby out with forceps. Halina now suffers Erb’s palsy, which is a paralysis of the arm caused by an injury to the upper group of the arm’s nerves. Study Finds Decline in Infant Cerebral Palsy
According to Seedol, a study conducted by a team of researchers in the Netherlands suggests a decline in the number of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The study findings were published in the journal of Pediatrics concluded that promising developments have been made in recent years in terms of cerebral palsy diagnosis and their severity on infants born prematurely. The study conducted by the University Medical Center Utrecht examined 3,000 children born prematurely, a group commonly susceptible to being diagnosed with cerebral palsy, over a 15-year period from 1990 to 2005. The researchers found that 6.5 percent of the infants born between 1990 and 1993 were diagnosed with the birth injury, while only 2.2 percent of infants born between 2002 and 2005 received a similar diagnosis.
