Settlement of $6.5 Million in Birth Injury Case
A child, who experienced extensive brain damage more than 10 years ago at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital while her mother was in labor, has been awarded a settlement of $6.5 million. The lawsuit claims that the hospital did not perform a timely cesarean operation when the mother was in labor with her child. The result of the delay is that her child is suffering from cerebral palsy and mental retardation, each directly related to the birth injuries incurred. This means that the child requires constant care, experiences seizures and has no options for employment or independent living in the future. Her mother filed and pursued the lawsuit against the hospital and the delivering physician on order to secure damages and the ability to provide the 24 hour care that her daughter will need for the rest of her life. Brain Cooling Used to Fight Birth Injury
An innovative new therapy is being used to fight birth injuries by cooling the baby’s body. It has been discovered that if a newborn’s body temperature is lowered to about 6 degrees below normal within six hours that it could decrease the damage done to the brain from birth injuries. The idea is that the low temperature causes the body to slip into whole body hypothermia. There have been many cases over the years when the protective benefits of cold temperatures for the brain have been noted. For example young children who have drowned in icy lakes and been resuscitated have recovered with little or no brain damage. Infant Dies Amid Heparin Scandal
One infant who was given overdoses of the blood thinner heparin died Tuesday morning (July 8). The mistake that lead to the widespread overdose at Christus Spohn Hospital South in Corpus Christi occurred in the pharmacy last Thursday where personnel mistakenly mixed the pediatric version of heparin with other solutions, including saline. Two pharmacy staffers are on voluntary leave until the investigation is resolved.
