Recent Research Reveals Even More Birth Defects Linked to Antidepressant

With more complaints and recent medical studies exposing birth defects in connection to Pfizer’s Zoloft, affected families have voiced their concerns and filed lawsuits against the negligent company. An Already Troubled Past In 1991, Pfizer started promoting Zoloft, an antidepressant, and the medication became one of the most popular depression medications in the U.S.; however, it was not long before the drug became linked to reports of serious birth defects in children who had been exposed to the drug in utero. Parents Receive $74 Million in Malpractice Lawsuit against Doctor

In April, a jury in California awarded a couple more than $74 million against a doctor on behalf of their daughter, finding the physician negligent during delivery of their child, which resulted in the baby developing cerebral palsy. During the trail, the couple’s attorney presented evidence that the baby’s heart rate was fluctuating wildly and the doctor did not hasten the birth or conduct a proper examination of cord blood during delivery. After two days of deliberation, the jury found that the physician was responsible for the botched delivery. The jury awarded damages that mostly cover medical costs that the family…

New Study Shows Influenza Virus Increases Risk Of Bipolar Disorder In Fetus

A study released on May 8 in JAMA Psychiatry says that mothers who contract the flu during pregnancy quadruple their child’s chance for bipolar disorder. The study was funded by the National Institute of Health and was conducted by Dr. Alan Brown of Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Brown insists that prospective mothers use common sense preventative measures to decrease their chances of contracting the influenza virus. Past studies have suggested that vaccinating expecting mothers could potentially cause birth defects to the fetus. Dr. Brown says evidence now suggests that the benefits of receiving immunization far outweigh any possible risk. However, only a small number of women get immunized despite public health recommendations. It is up to the prospective parents to ask the concerning questions from their doctor to receive proper vaccination. However, it is also up to the doctor to inform and educate the mother on…
