Car Seat Accommodations for Cerebral Palsy

On Monday we wrote about the terrible tragedy in Sacramento where a truck collided with a United Cerebral Palsy bus carrying seven adults with cerebral palsy. One of them died (along with the truck driver and an assistant on the bus), and the rest required treatment for their injuries. Passengers were treated for many injuries, including head trauma, a broken lower back, a broken arm, broken extremities, abrasions and contusions. Considering that people with cerebral palsy have delicate physical conditions, the fact that most of them survived is remarkable. UCP spokesperson Steve Horton said that the organization has always used buses equipped with plenty of seatbelts and wheelchair restraints. If you are responsible for someone with cerebral palsy, here are some things to keep in mind when searching for proper seat restraints. Adherence to law. Campaign Spreads Awareness of Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder dystocia occurs in approximately one percent of childbirths. Sometimes during delivery, the baby’s shoulder becomes stuck under the mother’s pubic bone. In one out of every thousand births, the doctor might damage the brachial plexus, a sensitive bundle of nerves near the neck and shoulders. Brachial plexus injuries can lead to life-long complications like loss of limb control or Erb’s palsy. PeriGen, a medical device company, is launching the “Start the Conversation” campaign to spread awareness of shoulder dystocia and help mothers recognize and prevent risk factors. Liver Condition Can Cause Cerebral Palsy if Undiagnosed

The liver processes many chemicals, including bilirubin, a waste chemical that results from the breakdown of certain cells. Bilirubin causes the yellow tint seen in bruises and urine. Some people have a condition wherein their liver cannot process bilirubin, so it builds up in the bloodstream. This condition is called hyperbilirubinemia, and it can cause jaundice or severe brain damage if left untreated. Occasionally, unborn children develop hyperbilirubinemia while in utero. The placenta is responsible for processing bilirubin, and sometimes the child cannot process it after birth. Fortunately, doctors can easily treat and reverse the condition if they find it early on by employing a mix of phototherapy and blood transfusion. If they fail to find it, however, the child may develop kernicterus, which may cause brain damage or cerebral palsy. Fortunately, kernicterus rates are very low in infants, affecting between .4 and 2.9 instances per 100,000 live births according…
