Boy with Cerebral Palsy Who Talks with His Eyes Receives €1.4M Award
Gill Russell is six years old. He has cerebral palsy, he uses a wheelchair and the only way he can communicate is through his eyes (with the help of a special computer). His condition stems from a traumatic birth. Doctors used a vacuum to deliver his head, and his shoulder was stuck for 12 minutes. This resulted in his shoulder dystocia, a condition that affects limb movement. He sustained a brain injury during his birth. An Irish high court issued an apology and a €1.4M award for the traumatic birth that resulted in Gill’s disability, with the possibility of more damages to come. “The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and staff at Cork University Maternity Hospital are truly sorry for your adverse experience,” the apology read.
