Children Born After Sibling with Autism at Greater Risk
A new study from scientists associated with the Baby Siblings Research Consortium finds that the risk for autism spectrum disorder in children with older siblings who have autism is 18.7 percent. According to CNN, the study monitored 664 infants from infancy to 36 months who had an older brother or sister with autism. These recent findings are much higher than previous studies that found a recurrence risk of three percent to 10 percent. The risk for autism recurrence is even higher in families with more than one affected sibling–33 percent. The study also noted that male infants experienced a 26 percent risk for autism, three times greater than female infants’ risk of nine percent. Parental age, older sibling gender and birth order were not predictors of autism, in that a second child born with autism increases the third child’s risk even if the first child does not have the disorder….

Australian Woman Sues Obstetrician over Her Own Birth Injury
Halina Jane Gillett, an Australian women who will be celebrating her 26th birthday this coming October, is suing Dr. Jeffrey Robinson for her current affliction of Erb’s palsy. Dr. Robinson was the obstetrician who delivered Halina over 25 years ago. Halina’s mother, Marilyn Benson-Inglis, states that she asked Dr. Robinson about a caesarean delivery because she was concerned that her child might be too large to deliver naturally. When Halina’s mother went into labor, the two choices available to deliver the child were a caesarean or use of forceps; Dr. Robinson chose to pull the baby out with forceps. Halina now suffers Erb’s palsy, which is a paralysis of the arm caused by an injury to the upper group of the arm’s nerves. Half of Stillborn Deaths Could Be Prevented, Says Study
According to MSNBC, recent study has found that more than two million babies stillborn each year worldwide and about half could be saved if their mothers had better medical care. The rates of stillborn births have not dropped in countries including Britain, France and the U.S. Experts say providing better obstetric care, treating conditions like syphilis, blood pressure and diabetes, could save more than one million infants every year. The research paid by the Save the Children organization, as well as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation found that in developing countries most stillbirths are caused by delivery complications, maternal infections during pregnancy, fetal growth problems and congenital abnormalities. Finland and Singapore had the lowest stillbirth rates worldwide, two per 1,000 births, while Nigeria and Pakistan had 42 and 47 stillbirths per 1,000, respectively.
