Birth Trauma Lawyers Discuss New Developments in Treatments For Cerebral Palsy
Two treatments for cerebral palsy have recently been making big impacts in the news, with both claiming to significantly impact the lives of those with the disability. One study is concerned with the use of the drug Botox, which is commonly used for cosmetic purposes to diminish wrinkles. While botulinum toxin is the most deadly poison known to science, the University of Lincoln study is focusing on the potentially deadly toxin’s ability to treat a variety of neurological symptoms. The University’s findings were discussed at a lecture held on March 19. Researchers are now able to rebuild Botox in a way that eliminates its toxicity, but keeps the drug’s ability to block the signals that tell muscles to contract. This decrease of muscle spasticity could prove to be a big improvement in the quality of life for many people with cerebral palsy. The second treatment comes from the Monash Institute…

UK Child with Erb’s Palsy Receives Six Figure Settlement From Negligent Hospital
A High Court judge in London approved an undisclosed, six figure payout to 9-year-old Demi Newell from the UK’s National Health System. Nuneaton News reported that the girl’s family accused George Eliot Hospital of negligent care during her birth, which subsequently caused her diagnosis of Erb’s palsy. During Demi’s delivery in 2003, she was so large that her shoulders became stuck—a condition known as shoulder dystocia. Because she was stuck, the medical professionals at Eliot negligently pulled her by her head in their attempts to deliver her. The malpractice resulted in a serious injury to Demi’s brachial plexus, an important network of nerves near the neck that signals the shoulders, arms and hands to move. This type of injury often leads to later diagnoses of Erb’s palsy. The injury Demi sustained to her brachial plexus caused her to have restricted use of one of her arms, making everyday activities more…

Birth Trauma Attorney Weighs In On Fraternal Twins With Autism
Parents Peter and Gaynelle Russert were more than surprised when they learned that at the ages of 40 and 44, respectively, they were going to be parents—and to twins nonetheless! The couple’s fraternal twins, Drew and Skyler, were almost four when they were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Skyler’s case was more severe than Drew’s, but with no family history of autism, Peter and Gaynelle began to question what other reasons could have caused this diagnosis. NBC reports that the family wondered whether environmental factors or possibly genetics caused the autism, but were never able to nail down one specific cause like most parents of children with autism. From an early age, Peter and Gaynelle involved the boys in medical studies, like a Stanford University investigation about fraternal twins with autism. Additionally, they began different forms of therapy and augmented the boys’ diet. Now 16, both Drew and Skylar…
