Our Birth Trauma Lawyers Discuss the Dangers of Terbutaline and Autism in Infants

Terbutaline is a generic version of name-brand drugs Brethine and Bricanyl. The generic drug is commonly used “off label” to halt pre-term labor, lengthen pregnancy and prevent premature birth. Annually, approximately 1 million women are treated with terbutaline for this purpose. Terbutaline is actually used to treat asthma, making its use to control pre-term labor highly controversial. Some physicians contend that the drug is dangerous while others say it is no more effective at prolonging labor than a placebo. The US Food and Drug Administration has not approved uses of terbutaline for anything other than controlling asthma. Recent studies have raised concerns that the drug may have a profound, negative impact on an unborn baby’s brain development due to overstimulation of certain brain activity. Overstimulation could lead to autism, particularly in twins. Further, the study’s findings suggest that exposure to drugs like terbutaline early in development could leave the brains…

Illinois Mother Files Lawsuit Alleging Medical Negligence

A mother has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois with allegations of medical negligence by the health care practitioners during her child’s birth. The plaintiff alleges that this medical negligence caused severe birth trauma and resulted in a diagnosis of Erb’s palsy. During her pregnancy, the Illinois mother developed fetal macrosomia— a term that is used to describe a newborn who is larger than 8 pounds, 13 ounces. Fetal macrosomia often makes traditional delivery difficult, thereby putting the baby at risk of birth trauma and brain injury. Certain precautions are used by medical professionals in other situations which involve fetal macrosomia in order to lessen this risk. This includes providing alternative methods of delivery, such as a C-section. The plaintiff’s newborn weighed 11 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. Due to the child’s large size, the newborn suffered a brachial plexus injury during…

Newborn Suffers Brain Injury After Hospital Delays Resuscitation

Nala Myers is three years old. She cannot walk or talk. She needs a feeding tube to eat. She will require assistance for the rest of her life. She had a difficult birth. When she was born, her heart was beating, but she was not breathing. A lawsuit filed by Tierra Myers, Nala’s mother, says that the hospital acted negligently in the critical five minutes following her birth, ultimately causing a brain injury. Most hospitals record an Apgar score one minute and five minutes after delivery. Apgar scores monitor breath, heart rate, muscle tone, response to stimulation and appearance. In this case, the lawsuit claims that whoever performed the one-minute Apgar score fudged the numbers to make Nala’s condition seem healthier than it was. As a result, response teams did not arrive to resuscitate the baby until it was too late. The jury deliberated for 15 hours before ultimately siding…
