Epilepsy, Autism, ADD and Cerebral Palsy Often Coexist
New research from Norway finds a large overlap between children with attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD, or autism), epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Scientists in Norway studied more than 700,000 children and published the results online in Pediatrics on June 18. They found the most overlap occurring in boys age 11 and younger. Specifically, the researchers found that: 17 percent of autistic children had ADD/ADHD 11 percent of autistic children had epilepsy 6 percent of children with ADD/ADHD were autistic 5 percent of children with ADD/ADHD were epileptic 13 percent of epileptic children had cerebral palsy 8 percent of epileptic children had ADD/ADHD 6 percent of epileptic children were autistic “The findings demonstrate the significant burden of disease associated with neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, and that this burden is disproportionately skewed towards boys,” wrote lead researcher Pål Surén and colleagues in the report….

UK Man With Cerebral Palsy Finishes Half Marathon
Some inspiring news from across the pond: a man with a severe form of cerebral palsy completed a five-day half marathon. Adam King, a 37-year-old Littleport man who cannot talk or walk, rode his electric wheelchair throughout his village and ended his half marathon at the Littleport Sports Centre. He participated in the marathon as a fundraising effort: he is saving to buy a computer that will use his eye movements to communicate. Liver Condition Can Cause Cerebral Palsy if Undiagnosed
The liver processes many chemicals, including bilirubin, a waste chemical that results from the breakdown of certain cells. Bilirubin causes the yellow tint seen in bruises and urine. Some people have a condition wherein their liver cannot process bilirubin, so it builds up in the bloodstream. This condition is called hyperbilirubinemia, and it can cause jaundice or severe brain damage if left untreated. Occasionally, unborn children develop hyperbilirubinemia while in utero. The placenta is responsible for processing bilirubin, and sometimes the child cannot process it after birth. Fortunately, doctors can easily treat and reverse the condition if they find it early on by employing a mix of phototherapy and blood transfusion. If they fail to find it, however, the child may develop kernicterus, which may cause brain damage or cerebral palsy. Fortunately, kernicterus rates are very low in infants, affecting between .4 and 2.9 instances per 100,000 live births according…
