Australian Boy Looks to the U.S. for Cerebral Palsy Therapy
The family of an Australian boy with cerebral palsy has almost succeeded in raising the money necessary to pay for revolutionary new cerebral palsy treatments in the United States. If the family succeeds, Blaise Wyatt will spend his third birthday in the U.S. Blaise suffers from spastic quadriplegia, a severe form of cerebral palsy that affects all of his limbs. He cannot talk, sit or stand. Blaise’s parents, Dawn and Cameron, have fundraised and saved $17,000 of the $20,000 needed to pay for the trip and the therapies. They recently launched a Facebook auction to raise the remaining money. The auction will feature 52 items donated from local businesses. If the fundraising is successful, the family will depart on March 31 for Michigan, where Blaise will undergo a variety of therapies. “We’ve got so much planned; I can’t decide whether I’m excited – it’s more hope I suppose,” said Dawn….

Game Update for Charity
In an effort to raise money for an operation to help a girl with cerebral palsy, game developer Big Ideas Digital has launched a charity drive involving one of its iPhone games. Born premature, Grace Windram was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2006. Birth trauma left her unable to control the muscles in her legs, arms, mouth and tongue. She underwent several treatments but is still unable to walk. Her parents hoped to change that, though, by applying to an intensive physiotherapy program at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Grace was accepted to the program. The only difficulty now is coming up with the money to pay for it. At $68,000, the treatment is far beyond the means of her family. Helping Disabled Children Become Gliding Stars
A program called “Gliding Stars” has been making figure skating accessible to people with physical, mental or emotional challenges since 1994. Started in Buffalo, New York, the program now operates in cities in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. A ritual is performed by Gliding Stars students each time they go on the ice. Each skater is escorted by one or two volunteers as they form a straight line in the center of the rink. Some can stand independently; some require walkers or arm braces. When the skating instructor gives the cue, they chant: “Can we skate? Yes we can!” This spirit is shared by all gliding student stars, including Bryson Sparrin, a 6-year-old boy with cerebral palsy.
