Service Dog For Cerebral Palsy Sufferer

A young man with cerebral palsy has been given the help he needs through the gift of a service dog in Trussville, Alabama. 23-year-old James “Kelly” Russell was born with cerebral palsy, which makes many mundane tasks we would take for granted exceedingly difficult for him. He is confined to a wheelchair, and has trouble with simple things like picking up items and turning off the lights. To his great delight, Russell now has a new friend to help. Russell’s helper, Reba, is a black retriever. The Canine Assistants Program, which offers free service dogs to disabled patients, recently paired up Reba with Russell. Service dogs like Reba can cost upwards of $15,000, far out of the price range of many people who need them. Online Shopping In Australia Gives To Cerebral Palsy

An interesting idea has come to fruition in Australia for sufferers of cerebral palsy in the form of online shopping. This Christmas shoppers can donate to a fund for cerebral palsy simply by making their purchases online. Cerebral Palsy Alliance has made arrangements with more than 200 online retailers, including some we might use here in the states, like Apple, Dell, and Clinique. When people make their purchases from these retailers through the Alliance’s e-store, the retailer will make a donation to Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Not only do the customers get to take some of the stress out of shopping by avoiding lines and general store chaos, they also get to feel good about making their purchases because of the donations to such an important effort. Christmas gifts are only a portion of what you can purchase using the service. You can buy baby products and clothes, rent cars, book…

Cerebral Palsy Sufferer Has New Best Friend

Eight-year-old Mason Murphy knows better than most the truth in the phrase “man’s best friend” when speaking of dogs. Suffering from cerebral palsy, the Mariemont, Ohio boy relies heavily on his companion dog, Crisp. Murphy cannot use his legs because of his affliction, requiring help with the most mundane of tasks. Before bed, Crisp helps the boy pull off his socks and his clothes. The dog opens and closes doors, pushes elevator buttons, and helps with Murphy’s physical therapy. Mason’s mother, Page Murphy, attempted to explain how important the dog was to her son. “Anywhere Mason goes, the dog goes,” she said. “Mason had surgery last week; the dog was in the hospital with him all week. They’re inseparable. They’re best buddies.” Crisp came from Canine Companions for Independence, a company that breeds companion dogs for people with disabilities. It took over two years of waiting to get a dog…
