Failure to Perform Cesarian Section Could Cause Birth Defects
When a traditional birth may cause complications for the child, the mother or both, doctors will perform a cesarean section. In a cesarean section, the doctor makes an incision in the abdominal wall and removes the baby through the incision. Cesarean sections are increasingly common: in 2009, 33 percent of births were performed with a cesarean section, a record high. There are many reasons for a doctor to recommend a cesarean section, or for a patient to choose one voluntarily. The placenta may block the cervix (placenta previa); the patient may develop diabetes during pregnancy, which typically leads to babies with higher birth weights; the baby may not be receiving enough oxygen (fetal distress); or the woman may be pregnant with twins or triplets, in which case a cesarean section is usually the safest mode of delivery. If a doctor fails to realize that a cesarean section is the safest…

Hospital Watchdog Warns of Early Cesarean Deliveries and Birth Injuries
The Leapfrog Group, a voluntary patient-safety program, said that early elective deliveries might put infants at an increased risk of birth injuries. The group presented its finding to inform parents-to-be about the risks of elective early deliveries. The group states some hospitals across the country are delivering 40 percent of newborn babies early for no medical reason. Among the 773 hospitals in the United States, the group found a wide range of inconsistencies between how often facilities performed early elective deliveries. Additionally, allowing early deliveries may result in higher birth injury, infant mortality rates and permanent health problems, the group claims. An early elective delivery is a cesarean section, a surgical procedure made through a pregnant mother’s abdomen to deliver a baby. Medical experts recommend a cesarean section when a vaginal delivery may pose a health risk to mother or baby, or in cases of multiple births. The Leapfrog Group…

Ohio Family Fights for Daughter With Cerebral Palsy
According to About Lawsuits, in December, an Ohio judge rejected a new trial request regarding a medical malpractice lawsuit involving cerebral palsy. Previously, $13.9 million dollars were awarded in the case where the doctor was found guilty of causing cerebral palsy due to issues that occurred during delivery. Cerebral palsy occurs after an injury to an infant’s brain, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the brain during or soon after birthing. This can result in developmental issues including loss of motor functions and various additional issues that occur with cerebral palsy. However, in some children, cerebral palsy may also occur for other reasons aside from medical mistakes. The child affected, now aged 10, suffers from cerebral palsy due to birth injury that occurred due to a forced vaginal birth. Haley Cobb, the little girl affected, cannot sit without help and requires constant care and attention. The child’s parents, Debra…
