A woman in Massachusetts gave birth to a baby with cerebral palsy. She filed a lawsuit against the doctors and the hospital, claiming that a series of medical mistakes led to her child’s disability. Pitocin The doctors administered Pitocin, a drug intended to speed up a prolonged labor. Sometimes the drug speeds up contractions so fast that the baby does not receive enough oxygen during birth. Parents File $80 Million Suit Against United States for Baby Brain Injury
Andrea and William Dorsheimer’s son was born in the USA Naval Hospital in Florida with severe brain damage. They recently filed a lawsuit blaming the hospital’s negligence for their baby’s injuries; they seek $80 million in damages. Andrea’s doctors decided to administer Pitocin, a drug intended to speed up delivery. We have blogged about Pitocin dangers before. Sometimes it speeds up contractions to the point where it restricts the flow of oxygen to the baby’s brain, which is what appeared to happen here. Two hours after giving Andrea the Pitocin dose, her child showed “non-reassuring signs” of fetal distress that continued for four hours. Iowa Gives Parents $3.75 Million for Cerebral Palsy Birth
Martha Fountain was 20 years old when she went to the University of Iowa hospital to give birth to her son. The medical staff decided to give her Pitocin, a hormone-based drug intended to speed up delivery. Unfortunately, the drug has an adverse effect in some women that causes excessive contractions that can restrict blood flow to the baby’s brain during pregnancy. The medical staff continued to administer Pitocin even after observing “significant trauma” to the baby’s head due to the difficult birth. Fountain was in labor for 28 hours and eventually delivered via cesarean section. Her son, now five years old, suffers from cerebral palsy and other cognitive impairments. She and her husband sued the hospital for negligence that resulted in her child’s condition. The hospital argued that other factors caused the issues.
