New Technique Could Reduce Birth Defects For In Vitro Fertilization Recipients
British researchers are studying a new technique for in vitro fertilization (IVF) that may increase the chances of a successful birth. The current average of a successful birth from IVF is 25 percent, but the new treatment is supposed to increase the chances to 75 percent. The new technique uses time lapse imaging to closely check the embryos and distinguish between those with chromosomal abnormalities and those without them. The current procedure for IVF is to check the developing embryo up to six times over five days. The new technique takes 5,000 snapshots over the same amount of time. Researchers say the new technique will increase the chance of a successful birth, consequently lowering the chances of experiencing a traumatic birth event like a miscarriage. New Study Shows Influenza Virus Increases Risk Of Bipolar Disorder In Fetus
A study released on May 8 in JAMA Psychiatry says that mothers who contract the flu during pregnancy quadruple their child’s chance for bipolar disorder. The study was funded by the National Institute of Health and was conducted by Dr. Alan Brown of Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Brown insists that prospective mothers use common sense preventative measures to decrease their chances of contracting the influenza virus. Past studies have suggested that vaccinating expecting mothers could potentially cause birth defects to the fetus. Dr. Brown says evidence now suggests that the benefits of receiving immunization far outweigh any possible risk. However, only a small number of women get immunized despite public health recommendations. Colorado State University Students Construct Swing For Two Children With Cerebral Palsy
Thanks to the efforts of a group of Colorado State University (CSU) students, two twins diagnosed with cerebral palsy are now able to add swinging to their play time activities. The children have to use electric wheelchairs to get around, so swinging for them was never a practical option. That was until the CSU students constructed a 3,000-pound wooden platform swing. The swing looks like a wooden deck that has been cemented into the ground. There are two harnesses at the ends of the platform where the children can strap themselves in. Once they are strapped in, someone is able to push the platform like a regular swing. In addition to the swing, they also built a deck attached to the swing with ramps for the children to get up from the house.
