Irish Family Compensated for Lost Earnings Due to Son’s Cerebral Palsy

Catherine Kenny had big plans for her son, Shane. They live on a farm, and Shane was set to be the sole inheritor of the farm. He would oversee every task on the family’s 168 acres, which is valued at €2.3 million. When he became too old, he would sell the farm or pass it along to his children. Unfortunately, doctors made a mistake during Shane’s birth that led to his cerebral palsy. Due to his disability, he cannot work on the farm. Catherine filed a birth trauma lawsuit on behalf of her son to reclaim all the potential wages that he could have earned running the farm. The judge found that Shane’s birth injury disqualified him from earning a living from the family’s farm. The Kennys received €665,000 to compensate for potential lost wages. This is on top of an earlier €1 million award to compensate for his injuries…

New Study IDs Premature Birth Risks

Researchers in Australia have identified several factors that may put pregnant women at risk of a premature birth. According to the study led by Gustaaf Dekker, MD, Ph.D at the University of Adelaide, women may give birth early if they: Smoke marijuana Have a history of vaginal bleeding Have mothers with a history of pre-eclampsia Have mothers with diabetes Have high blood pressure Are very thin (body mass index under 20) Have a family history of babies with low birth weights Have a short cervix “Better understanding the risk factors involved in preterm birth moves us another step forward in potentially developing a test – genetic or otherwise – that will help us to predict with greater accuracy the risk of preterm birth,” Dekker said. “Our ultimate aim is to safeguard the lives of babies and their health in the longer term.” Dekker studied 3,234 women, and nearly 5 percent…

Chilled Blankets Decrease Rates of Cerebral Palsy, Study Says

A federally funded study found that using chilled blankets immediately after birth reduces the risk of cerebral palsy and infant death. The study charted survival rates of children born with birth trauma, mainly lack of oxygen during birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a.k.a HIE). Doctors studied 208 births in various hospitals across the country. Doctors identified children with HIE within six hours of their birth and administered either traditional treatments or a cooling blanket. Cold water circulates through the blanket, cooling the newborn’s temperature. Researchers found that newborns in the traditional treatment group had a mortality rate of 44 percent, while newborns given the chilled blanket treatment (called hypothermia) had a mortality rate of 28 percent. They were also less likely to develop conditions usually associated with traumatic birth, such as cerebral palsy, limited motor function, vision problems and epilepsy. The hypothermia treatment is standard practice at many hospitals. The study expands…
