Cerebral Palsy Attorneys Secure $23.8 Million Settlement
A woman in Massachusetts gave birth to a baby with cerebral palsy. She filed a lawsuit against the doctors and the hospital, claiming that a series of medical mistakes led to her child’s disability. Pitocin The doctors administered Pitocin, a drug intended to speed up a prolonged labor. Sometimes the drug speeds up contractions so fast that the baby does not receive enough oxygen during birth. Lack of Attention The lawsuit claims that the doctors on staff did not closely monitor the woman or her child’s vital signs, and they did not notice that the Pitocin had raised her contraction rates to dangerous levels. Failure to Perform a C-Section When a vaginal birth takes too long or risks injury to the mother or child, most doctors will perform a C-section to minimize injury. Birth Trauma Attorneys Can Help Victims of Vacuum Extraction Injuries
Using a vacuum tool during delivery is a very risky decision for doctors to make. Two Pennsylvania parents say that doctors made a series of mistakes – including using a vacuum – during their child’s birth that led to his death. Mark and Cheryl Baiocchi filed a wrongful death lawsuit against St. Mary Medical Center, Dr. Traci Cook, the Women’s Specialists of Bucks County and Catholic Health East for medical negligence. Approximately 12 hours after arriving at the hospital, Dr. Cook used a Kiwi vacuum extraction device to remove the child during labor. The doctor used the device multiple times even though it was not necessary, according to the lawsuit. The vacuum raised the child’s heart rate, causing heart tone tachychardia. The child’s shoulder became stuck, causing shoulder dystocia. When he was born, he was “cyanotic, pulseless, apneic and floppy.” Doctors transferred him to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Doctors…

Parents File $50 Million Birth Injury Suit Against Hospital
Each moment counts when delivering a baby, especially when things start to go wrong. A recent federal tort lawsuit filed in California alleges that one hospital’s mistake caused $50 million worth of permanent brain damage to a child. When Stefanie Davis went into labor in January of 2010, doctors determined that a vaginal birth was out of the question due to the baby’s position. The attending physician performed a C-section with a vacuum extraction, which many health experts acknowledge poses certain health risks to the baby. The procedure involves placing a small vacuum on the baby’s head to aid its removal from the womb. After removing the baby, nurses noticed signs of distress on the child where the doctor applied the vacuum, such as bruising, swelling and hemorrhaging. The baby showed signs of increased heartbeat and rapid breathing, which doctors later diagnosed as consistent with a seizure disorder. The injuries…
