A recent study lead by Dr. Lewis Holmes of the Massachusetts General Hospital concludes that the test, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), increases the rate of hemangiomas, birth defects caused by the abnormal growth of blood vessels, and other vascular limb defects.

CVS is usually performed in the first trimester. It has been regarded as a relatively safe procedure during which a small section of the placenta is removed and tested for serious genetic diseases such as Down syndrome. However, Holmes’ study found that the rate of a defect affecting two fingers increased from 1 in 54,000 to 1 in 3,000 in infants who had undergone CVS.
